Ultra-soft, tender milk buns packed with melty chocolate chips — baked until golden and dusted with powdered sugar. A sweet twist on classic milk bread that’s surprisingly easy to make at home.

  • Total Time: 1 hour 36 minutes
  • Yield: 8 buns 1x

Ingredients

Scale
  • 3 1/2 cups (420g) all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 cup (100g) granulated sugar
  • 2 tsp instant yeast
  • 3/4 tsp salt
  • 1/2 cup (120ml) whole milk, warmed to 110°F
  • 1/4 cup (60g) unsalted butter, softened
  • 1 large egg, room temperature
  • 1/2 cup (90g) semi-sweet chocolate chips
  • 1 tbsp powdered sugar, for dusting

Instructions

  1. In a large bowl, whisk together flour, sugar, yeast, and salt.
  2. Add warmed milk, softened butter, and egg. Mix until a shaggy dough forms.
  3. Knead by hand or with a dough hook for 8–10 minutes until smooth and elastic.
  4. Stir in chocolate chips until just incorporated.
  5. Place dough in a greased bowl, cover, and let rise in a warm spot for 1–1.5 hours or until doubled.
  6. Punch down dough, divide into 8 equal pieces, and shape into smooth rolls.
  7. Place on a parchment-lined baking sheet, cover, and let rise 30 minutes.
  8. Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Bake for 14–16 minutes until golden brown.
  9. Cool 5 minutes on sheet, then transfer to a wire rack. Dust with powdered sugar before serving.

Notes

  • For extra softness, replace 1/4 cup milk with heavy cream.
  • Dough can be made ahead and refrigerated overnight; bring to room temp before shaping.
  • Use high-quality chocolate chips — the quality really shows in the final bake.
  • Store in an airtight container for up to 3 days, or freeze for up to 1 month.
