Ingredients
Scale
- 1 lb boneless, skinless chicken breasts or thighs, sliced into strips
- 2 tablespoons olive oil
- 3 cloves garlic, minced
- 1 teaspoon dried oregano
- 1 teaspoon ground cumin
- 1 teaspoon smoked paprika
- 1/2 teaspoon ground coriander
- Salt and freshly ground black pepper to taste
- Pita bread or flatbreads for serving
- Fresh vegetables: sliced tomatoes, red onion, cucumber, and lettuce
- Fresh herbs: chopped parsley or dill (optional)
Instructions
- Combine olive oil, minced garlic, oregano, cumin, paprika, coriander, salt, and pepper in a bowl. Toss the chicken strips in this marinade until evenly coated. Cover and refrigerate for at least 30 minutes.
- Heat a skillet over medium-high heat. Cook the marinated chicken for 6-8 minutes, stirring occasionally, until cooked through and browned. Alternatively, grill the chicken for extra smoky flavor. Set aside.
- Prepare the Tzatziki by grating the cucumber and squeezing out excess moisture. Mix Greek yogurt, grated cucumber, minced garlic, chopped dill, lemon juice, salt, and pepper until smooth. Chill for 30 minutes.
- Warm pita bread or flatbreads. Spread a generous layer of Tzatziki on each. Layer cooked chicken and top with fresh sliced tomatoes, red onions, cucumbers, lettuce, and herbs.
- Fold the gyros in half and serve immediately with lemon wedges and extra Tzatziki.
Notes
- For more flavor, marinate the chicken overnight.
- You can substitute chicken with lamb or beef for variation.
- Warm the pita before assembling to keep it soft and pliable.
- Store leftovers separately in airtight containers and reheat quickly before serving.
