This Quick and Simple Swedish Meatball Casserole is the perfect solution for busy weeknights! Combining classic Swedish meatball flavors with the convenience of a casserole, this dish is hearty, delicious, and easy to prepare, making it a family favorite.

  • Total Time: 45 minutes
  • Yield: 6 servings 1x

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 lb ground beef
  • 1 lb ground pork
  • 1 cup breadcrumbs
  • 1/2 cup milk
  • 1 egg
  • 1 small onion, finely chopped
  • 1 tsp allspice
  • 1/2 tsp nutmeg
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • 2 tbsp butter
  • 2 tbsp flour
  • 2 cups beef broth
  • 1/2 cup sour cream
  • 1 tbsp Dijon mustard

Instructions

  1. In a large bowl, combine ground beef, ground pork, breadcrumbs, milk, egg, chopped onion, allspice, nutmeg, salt, and pepper. Mix well and roll into small meatballs.
  2. Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C). Brown the meatballs in a skillet over medium heat until cooked through, then transfer to a greased 9×13 inch baking dish.
  3. In the same skillet, melt butter, whisk in flour to create a roux, then gradually add beef broth, stirring to avoid lumps. Stir in sour cream and Dijon mustard, and season with salt and pepper.
  4. Pour the sauce over the meatballs in the baking dish. Cover with foil and bake for 20 minutes, then remove foil and bake for an additional 10-15 minutes until bubbly.

Notes

  • For extra flavor, add Worcestershire sauce to either the meatball mix or the sauce.
  • You can use pre-made Swedish meatballs if you’re short on time; adjust baking time as needed.
  • Ensure the sauce is thick enough to coat the meatballs to prevent drying out.
  • Serve with mashed potatoes, egg noodles, or rice for a complete meal.
