Ingredients
Scale
- 1 pound ground beef
- 1 onion, chopped
- 1 (15 ounce) can tomato sauce
- 1/4 cup ketchup
- 2 tablespoons brown sugar
- 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
- 1 teaspoon mustard
- Salt and pepper to taste
- 8 slices of bread
- Butter, for spreading
- 8 slices of cheese (cheddar, mozzarella, or your favorite)
Instructions
- Brown the ground beef with the chopped onion in a large skillet over medium-high heat. Drain any excess grease.
- Add tomato sauce, ketchup, brown sugar, Worcestershire sauce, mustard, salt, and pepper to the skillet. Simmer for 10-15 minutes.
- Lightly butter one side of each bread slice. Place four slices butter-side down and add two cheese slices on top.
- Spoon the sloppy joe mixture over the cheese, add another cheese slice and top with remaining bread slices, butter-side up. Grill on medium heat until golden brown.
Notes
- Choose a well-melting cheese like cheddar or mozzarella.
- Sourdough or Texas toast adds extra flavor.
- Maintain medium heat to evenly cook the sandwich.
- Ensure the sloppy joe mixture isn’t overly runny.
- Add diced bell peppers or jalapeños for extra flavor.
