Ingredients
Scale
- 1 pound fresh ripe figs
- 1/2 cup sugar or honey (adjust to taste)
- 1 tablespoon lemon juice
- Optional: a pinch of cinnamon or vanilla extract
Instructions
- Start by washing the fresh figs thoroughly. Remove the stems and roughly chop the figs into smaller pieces.
- In a medium-sized saucepan, combine the chopped figs, sugar or honey, and lemon juice. Bring to a gentle boil over medium heat, stirring frequently.
- Reduce heat to low and simmer for 20-30 minutes, stirring occasionally. Mash the figs with the back of a spoon or use a paddle attachment of a stand mixer for a smoother consistency.
- Remove from heat and let cool for a few minutes. Transfer the jam into sterilized jars or containers.
- Store in the refrigerator for up to 3 weeks or process in a water bath canner for long-term storage. Enjoy on toast, cheese platters, or as a versatile ingredient in recipes.
Notes
- Adjust sweetness according to your taste, using honey or maple syrup as alternatives to sugar.
- If using dried figs, rehydrate them in warm water for 30 minutes before cooking.
- The jam thickens as it cools; for a firmer texture, simmer a little longer.
- Make sure to sterilize jars for longer shelf life or freeze small portions for extended storage.
