- 2 ½ cups all-purpose flour
- 2 ½ tsp baking powder
- 1 tsp salt
- 1 ½ cups granulated sugar
- 1 cup unsalted butter, softened
- 4 large eggs
- 1 tsp vanilla extract
- 1 cup milk
- Food coloring (various colors)
- Buttercream frosting
- Sprinkles and edible glitter (for decoration)
Instructions
- Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).
- In a large mixing bowl, combine the flour, baking powder, and salt.
- Cream together the butter and sugar until light and fluffy.
- Add eggs one at a time, mixing well after each addition, then stir in vanilla.
- Gradually add the dry ingredients alternately with the milk, mixing until smooth.
- Divide the batter into separate bowls for coloring.
- Grease and flour two round cake pans.
- Pour the colored batter into the pans, filling them about 2/3 full.
- Bake for approximately 25-30 minutes or until a toothpick comes out clean.
- Let the cakes cool for 10 minutes before transferring to a wire rack to cool completely.
- Place one cake layer on a serving plate and spread buttercream frosting on top.
- Carefully place the second layer on top and frost the entire cake.
- Use colored buttercream to pipe butterfly wings on the sides of the cake.
- Finish with colorful sprinkles and edible glitter.
Notes
- Store leftovers in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days.
- Add plastic wrap to the cake before sealing to keep it moist.
- This cake can be made a day in advance—frost it on the day of the celebration.
- Consider using cream cheese frosting as an alternative to buttercream.
